Only 48% of produced water gets to final consumer – GWL

Ghana Water Limited (GWL) is facing a significant challenge with its water distribution system, with a staggering 52% of treated water being lost due to various issues. This means that only 48% of the water produced actually reaches consumers’ homes.

The main culprits behind this massive loss are pipeline leakages, illegal connections, and inefficiencies in the distribution infrastructure.

Acting CEO Adam Mutawakilu highlighted the severity of the problem, stating that the non-revenue water rate stood at 52% as of December 2024. This not only results in wastage and financial losses but also leads to inadequate water supply for many communities.

To tackle this issue, GWL is taking steps to upgrade its infrastructure, enhance maintenance, and deploy modern technology to boost production. The company is also engaging with stakeholders to find lasting solutions to the problem

“Furthermore, high level of water loss due to leakage in pipes, illegal connection and inefficient distribution systems continue to circumvent water loss before it even reaches consumers. As at the end of December 2024, non-revenue water was 52 percent. So that means the moment we produce water and dispatch only 48 percent gets to customers.” The CEO indicated.
