Koforidua High Court issues bench warrant for the arrest of Akwatia MP

The Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi, has been convicted of contempt of court by the High Court in Koforidua, Eastern Region.
This ruling comes after Kumi defied an interim injunction that barred him from being sworn in as a legislator.
The court had previously restrained Kumi from taking the oath of office due to a pending legal dispute. However, he ignored this directive and went ahead with the swearing-in ceremony in Parliament.
The judge, Justice Senyo Amedehe, cited overwhelming evidence of Kumi’s willful defiance, leading to the contempt ruling.
To make matters worse, Kumi failed to appear in court for sentencing, prompting Justice Amedehe to issue a bench warrant for his arrest.
The Minority Caucus in Parliament tried to justify Kumi’s absence with an official letter, but the judge wasn’t having it, stating that Kumi had disregarded the court’s authority.
With the bench warrant in effect, authorities are expected to enforce Kumi’s arrest and ensure he complies with the court’s ruling.
This development highlights the importance of upholding the rule of law and respecting the authority of the courts.
