Sam George orders NCA to shut down 7 radio stations

Ghana’s Minister of Communication, Samuel Nurety George, has ordered the shutdown of seven radio stations across the country.
This decision was made to enforce compliance with broadcasting regulations and national security requirements.
According to George, one station, Gumah FM in Bawku, was shut down due to national security concerns, as it was allegedly used to incite violence and escalate tension in the North East Region.
The other six stations were found to be operating without valid frequency authorization, following a recent frequency audit.
The affected radio stations are:
– Gumah FM, Bawku (national security concerns)
– Fire Group of Companies, Sunyani (operating without valid frequency authorization)
– I-Zar Consult Limited, Tamale (operating without valid frequency authorization)
– Abochannel Media Group, Adidome (operating without valid frequency authorization)
– Okyeame Radio Limited, Bibiani (operating without valid frequency authorization)
– Mumen Bono Foundation, Techiman (operating without valid frequency authorization)
– Osikani Community FM, Nkrankwanta (operating without valid frequency authorization)
George emphasized that the directive is effective immediately, with further action expected in the coming days.
“Today, in two separate cases, I have directed the National Communications Authority Ghana to suspend and enforce a prohibition of broadcast on seven (7) radio stations in total.”
He also urged all media houses to comply with the terms of their frequency authorizations.
“Once again, I reiterate my commitment to sanitising our airwaves and ensuring strict adherence to the law concerning frequency authorisations. I urge all media houses to ensure they are complying with ALL the terms of their frequency authorisations,” he added.
